Released on 1 June 2024 and part of ASICS's Gel Kayano 31 line. This release has a mesh upper in Piedmont Grey/Fiery Red. The Gel-Kayano is ASICS' long-running stability franchise, and unusually for a mass running line, it is named after a person: Toshikazu Kayano, the ASICS designer responsible for every model in the series up to the fourteenth. That fourteenth release, which arrived in 2008, was the first designed by another hand, Hidenori Yamashita, a handover that itself signals how long a single designer shaped the line. Few running franchises sustain a numbered series deep into double digits; the Kayano has, iterating year over year while keeping cushioning and support at the centre of the design.
The Kayano family serves two very different buyers. Runners buy current generations for stability and gel cushioning over daily mileage. Style-led buyers hunt specific heritage numbers and colourways, with the 14 the obvious entry point given its collaboration history. For Indian buyers the practical appeal is real: cushioned, supportive shoes handle long days on hard city surfaces better than flat retro silhouettes do. The line's fashion moment came through the Gel-Kayano 14, whose collaboration with the Montreal based studio JJJJound released on August 26, 2022 and sold out, a project credited with cementing that model's standing in the fashion world. The effect spilled across the whole franchise: a series known for decades as a runner's workhorse became a source for the 2000s technical aesthetic, and older numbered Kayanos gained a second audience that had never run a kilometre in them.
This release wears a Piedmont Grey/Fiery Red execution with a mesh build. It reached the market in 2024. Across generations the Kayano formula holds steady: a breathable upper, structured overlays for midfoot and heel support, and ASICS' signature gel cushioning underfoot to absorb shock over distance. It is built as a stability shoe first, which is why the midsoles are substantial and the support elements visible rather than hidden. Specific generations vary in materials and technology, and heritage models from the 2000s, such as the 14, are now reissued with their era's layered synthetic overlays intact.
