Black Toe is one of the founding colour arrangements of the Air Jordan 1: white body, black toe cap and collar, red on the Swoosh and heel, a division of the upper into three clear zones. It comes from the same season that turned Nike's modest plan, roughly three million dollars in sales over three years, into a sell out of the initial 50,000 pairs and more than 150 million dollars. This special edition brings that arrangement to the Low, which reverses the original logic: the colour blocking was designed for a high top's larger canvas, and compressing it onto a low cut forces the panels into a tighter, sharper relationship.
Colour blocked Lows look best with straight lines. Mid wash straight leg jeans with a white tee and a black overshirt repeats the shoe's three zones in the outfit without matching it literally. Alternatively, black tapered trousers and a grey crewneck lets the white and red do all the lifting. Cuff the hem so the toe cap is visible; the block is the point. Low or no show socks suit the cut better than crew. Wipe the white after every wear before dirt sets, keep the pair out of rain to prevent red bleeding onto white, and rotate wear so the vamp crease develops slowly.
Black Toe carries the weight of the original season, and that season is inseparable from the Banned campaign. The NBA required shoes to be at least 51 percent white with a 5,000 dollar per game fine; the shoe cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype Jordan wore before the 1 released, and Nike paid the fines and advertised the conflict instead of changing the design. That story built a resale market later valued at roughly 2 billion dollars, with original 1985 pairs reaching about 20,000 dollars on StockX. A Low in this palette is the accessible entry into the shoe's most quoted colour idea.
Three zone colour blocking depends entirely on stitching quality, and the 1 Low gives you separate toe cap, eyestay, quarter panel and Swoosh to judge it by. Look at how cleanly the black toe meets the white vamp; that seam is the shoe. Underfoot is a flat rubber cupsole with no cushioning window, since Nike Air came into the line at the Air Jordan 2, so the ride is low and firm rather than plush. Perforations run across the toe. The white quarter panel takes the most abuse, so clean it with a foam cleaner and a soft brush and keep red and black panels from sitting wet against it.
