Released on 4 June 2024 and part of adidas's Gazelle line. This release has a suede upper in Blue Bird/Cloud White/Gum. The Gazelle Indoor is the harder, flatter cousin of the Gazelle everybody knows, built with the low grip logic of a sports hall shoe, and Blue Bird is a bright, clean mid blue that makes it look like a piece of kit rather than a casual sneaker. Add the gum sole and the shoe warms up considerably, the honey tone cutting the coldness of the blue. adidas Originals keeps silhouettes like this in rotation because they were designed with a single purpose and therefore carry no styling fat, which is exactly what makes them easy to wear decades after the sport moved elsewhere.
Bright blue is a colour, so let it be the only one. Cream or ecru wide leg trousers with a white tee makes the shoe the entire outfit, and washed black denim with a grey sweatshirt gives you a colder frame that pushes the blue forward. The slim low build sits neatly under tapered hems where a chunky trainer would look bulky. Spray the suede before wearing and brush it regularly to keep the nap standing. On the gum sole, wash off street grit early with mild soap, because once it embeds the gum turns permanently grey and no amount of scrubbing brings the honey tone back.
Originals exists because adidas' sport shoes kept walking out of sport. The Superstar and the Stan Smith became the base layer of European football terrace and casual dressing, and the indoor court shapes followed the same route out of the hall and onto the street. The Trefoil that marks this range was designed in 1971 and launched for the 1972 Munich Olympics, and it now signals precisely this: adidas selling its own past back as clothing. A bright blue indoor shoe with a gum sole is that trade at its most cheerful.
Suede across the upper in the blue, with contrast Three Stripes on the quarter and a T shaped toe reinforcement, sitting on a gum rubber outsole. Gum is the traditional indoor court compound because it grips polished wood without leaving marks, and that translates into strong traction on smooth city surfaces. The upper is slim and the sole is thin, so the shoe wraps the foot closely and gives you very little between you and the ground. Bright suede is the demanding part: it water spots easily and the nap flattens where the toe creases, so protection before first wear is the difference between a shoe that ages well and one that looks tired in a month.
