    Culture Note™

Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 January 2014 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has the Black/White/Game Royal/Metallic Platinum colourway. Game Royal is one of the few colours outside red, black and white that feels native to the Air Jordan 1, and against black it becomes the sharpest version of itself. The model was drawn by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore for a rookie Nike signed on 26 October 1984, produced for Jordan that November and released to the public on 1 April 1985. Royal blue entered the shoe's vocabulary in that same first era, which is why a black and royal low still reads as heritage rather than experiment. The low cut removes the padded ankle collar and the Wings logo placement of the high, leaving the panel structure and the Swoosh to carry a two colour scheme with nothing to soften it.
Blue and black want denim or nothing. First: dark indigo jeans, a black tee, a navy or black jacket, socks black so the eye goes straight to the royal panels rather than the ankle. Second: grey sweatpants with a tapered leg, a white tee, a royal or navy cap picking up the shoe, everything else neutral. Do not add a third colour, since the shoe already runs two hard ones. Lows suit warm weather and short travel days, and black hides city dust well while the royal panels do not, so brush those first. Foam cleaner and a soft brush handle both tones, and avoid solvents, which lift saturated blue faster than they lift dirt.
Royal blue is one of the colours that survived from the shoe's first years into its permanent palette, alongside the Chicago red, black and white that function as brand colours in themselves. That palette memory is a large part of why the Air Jordan 1 became the shoe that turned sneaker collecting into a mass activity, with original 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars on StockX. The wider cultural push came from outside sport: Spike Lee directing Nike's early advertising while playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, and 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z putting the shoes into their records. A black and royal low borrows all of that recognition and asks for almost no styling effort in return.
Low cut Air Jordan 1s are the same stitched panel build as the high, minus the collar height, which means the Swoosh becomes the dominant shape and the colour split falls along the seams. Black against royal is a hard edge: the seam lines read as drawn lines from across a room. Nike Air did not reach the signature line until the Air Jordan 2, so this sits flat and firm, all stability and very little cushioning, which is why lows suit walking on smooth surfaces more than long days on concrete. The lower collar makes them easy to pull on without unlacing, and that habit is exactly what stretches the heel. Use the top eyelet and the fit stays true for years.
