Designed by Peter Moore and released on 16 February 2024 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a denim upper in Phantom/Multi-Color/Coconut Milk. Phantom is one of the brand's quietest neutrals, a pale off white with a grey cast, and pairing it with blue on a women's Low gives you the 1 at its least confrontational. That matters because the model's whole reputation is confrontation: Nike signed a Bulls rookie in October 1984 on a six year, 2.5 million dollar deal worth about three times any other in the league, with a royalty on sales attached, and then marketed the resulting shoe as something the establishment did not want on court. Four decades on, the same outline can be sold as a soft neutral shoe and nobody finds it strange. That is what full cultural absorption looks like.
Recipe one: light denim, a white tee, and a navy cardigan, where the shoe sits between the two blues and softens the whole outfit. Recipe two: grey wide leg trousers, a cream knit, and a light trench, an all neutral build where the blue on the shoe is the only cool point. Cream or light grey socks rather than bright white, which would make Phantom look grubby by comparison. Fit true to size, half up if wide. Treat the pale upper before first wear, since off white absorbs stains, clean marks the same day with mild soap on a soft cloth, and dry at room temperature away from radiators.
The 1 is the shoe that made sneaker collecting a mass activity, and the market that grew from it has been valued at roughly 2 billion dollars, with original 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars on StockX. That value was built on the Banned advertising, which used the NBA's requirement that shoes be at least 51 percent white and the 5,000 dollar per game fine Nike chose to pay rather than redesign. It is worth stating plainly that the league did not ban the Air Jordan I, and the shoe cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype worn before this model released. The story sold anyway.
The Low cut sits below the ankle bone, which makes it the easiest 1 to wear and the least supportive, with the fit resting entirely on the forefoot and the lace tension. Phantom is a warm off white, which is a smarter everyday choice than pure white: it hides the dust and yellowing that make cool whites look tired. The blue does the panel definition, so you can read the shoe's structure from a distance without any hard contrast. The W last runs narrower through the midfoot. Lace moderately, since a Low has no collar to spread pressure and hard lace tension goes straight into the top of the foot.
