Culture Note™
Chicago is the colourway that carries the whole founding story, and Lost and Found is the version that treats it as an artefact rather than a new product, presented as though the pair had been found rather than made. In preschool sizing that idea gets funnier and better: the most reverently handled colourway in sneakers, made for a child who will scuff it within a week. The original shoe was drawn by Peter Moore with Bruce Kilgore, reached the public on 1 April 1985, sold out its initial 50,000 pairs and passed 150 million dollars in sales against a Nike projection of about 3 million over three years.
Recipe one: blue denim, a white tee, and a red beanie, the simplest use of the palette and the one that photographs best on a kid. Recipe two: black joggers, a black hoodie, and white socks, where the shoe is the only colour and the outfit takes seconds to assemble. Buy with a thumb width of growing room and check the fit every couple of months at this age. Treat the white panels before first wear rather than after the first disaster, brush dry mud off instead of washing wet, clean red separately so dye does not drag onto white, and air dry away from radiators.
The Chicago palette is inseparable from the Banned advertising, which grew out of the NBA rule that shoes be at least 51 percent white, carrying a 5,000 dollar per game fine that Nike chose to pay rather than redesign. Be precise about the story, because it is repeated wrongly: the league never banned the Air Jordan I, and the shoe actually cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype Jordan wore before this model released. Nike understood that the accusation was worth more than compliance, and that campaign taught the whole sneaker market that transgression sells.
Retro High OG signals the brand is reproducing the original build rather than updating it, which means a tall collar sitting above the ankle bone, the Wings mark high on the quarter panel, and a long eyelet row. PS is preschool sizing, so the last is smaller, the build is lighter and the entry is usually easier, since a child has to get into the shoe unaided. The red and white blocking makes every panel edge visible, which means white areas will show scuffing early and red areas will hold their look longest. Lace it through every eyelet for a child, because a High with a slack collar is a trip hazard rather than a style choice.
