Obsidian is a deep, almost black navy, and it is one of the few tones that can sit on a Retro High OG without ever looking like a costume. The High OG is the original cut, the shoe Peter Moore and Bruce Kilgore drew after Nike signed a rookie on 26 October 1984 and gave him a royalty because it wanted his identity rather than a star's reputation. Nike projected 3 million dollars over three years; the first 50,000 pairs sold out and the shoe passed 150 million. Navy was never part of the Chicago palette that became brand property, which is why Obsidian reads as adult rather than nostalgic: it uses the most recognisable sneaker outline in the world in the least attention seeking way available.
