    Culture Note™

Bred is black over red, the pairing that has followed this shoe since 1985, and patent leather is a material the line did not adopt until the Air Jordan 11, when it brought formal wear surfacing onto a basketball court and permanently changed what a Jordan could be worn with. Putting patent on the Retro High OG collapses those two chapters into one shoe. The panel layout is Peter Moore's from 1984, the finish belongs to the model that made people wear sneakers with suits. What you get is the founding colourway with its volume raised, because gloss reflects where matte leather absorbs, and the black quarter panel becomes a mirror instead of a background.
Recipe one: black wool trousers with a break at the ankle, a white shirt, and a black overcoat, letting the gloss do what a polished dress shoe would. Recipe two: black raw denim, a red knit beanie and a black bomber, an intentionally literal reading of the colourway. This is a night and cold weather shoe: patent hates strong sun and heat, which can dull and craze the coating. Fit runs true for most people, half up for wide feet. Wipe patent with a soft damp cloth and dry immediately, never use solvent or alcohol on it, and store away from radiators and humidity, since ageing midsole materials break down over time regardless of how carefully the upper is kept.
Black and red is the palette the line built its whole attitude on, and hip hop carried it further than basketball did. 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z all referenced Jordan and his sneakers, and Nike's Spike Lee directed advertising, with Lee playing Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan, put the shoe into film language before sneaker media existed. Patent leather added a second audience: once the material crossed over from formalwear, the shoe stopped being restricted to sportswear fits. This pair is where those two arguments meet, and it is one of the reasons original pairs of the model have traded around 20,000 dollars in the collecting market the shoe created.
Patent leather is a coated surface, so it behaves differently from the tumbled leather most Air Jordan 1s use. It resists water and light staining well, it wipes clean with almost nothing, and it creases in sharp lines rather than soft folds, which means the flex point across the toe box will show a defined crack pattern rather than a gentle wrinkle. That is the trade for the shine. Underneath, the build is unchanged: separate toe, eyestay, quarter and heel panels stitched over a foam midsole, a rubber outsole with the forefoot pivot circle, and the Wings logo on the high collar. The tall collar and firm heel counter need a couple of weeks of wear before the shoe stops fighting your ankle.
