Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 15 November 2025 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has the Varsity Red/Black/Summit White colourway. Chicago on a Low is a compression of the founding idea. The Air Jordan 1 debuted for Jordan on 17 November 1984 and reached the public on 1 April 1985, in the red, black and white of the team he had just joined, and that palette has functioned as brand colours ever since. Cutting the collar down does not weaken the reference, it just changes the occasion: the same colour argument, made in a shoe you can put on without thinking about your trouser hem. In grade school sizing it does the job the original did, arriving early in a wearer's life, before any of the history needs explaining.
Recipe one: black jeans with a white tee and a red hooded sweatshirt, the straightforward reading that any young wearer will land on first. Recipe two: grey sweatpants with a black crewneck and a white cap, using the shoe as the only colour in the fit. This is an everyday school and weekend shoe, easy to put on, and the low collar means no ankle break in. Buy with modest growing room rather than a full size up. Clean the white panels early and often with mild soap and a soft brush, keep them away from bleach and hot water, dry naturally, and store cool and dry, since ageing midsole materials break down over time.
Nike expected about 3 million dollars in sales over three years from this shoe. The initial 50,000 pairs sold out and it passed 150 million dollars, which is the moment the sneaker business changed shape. Note that reported first year revenue figures vary widely and are disputed, so the sold out run and the 150 million dollar figure are the reliable ones. Chicago is the colourway carrying that history, which is why the brand returns to it more than any other, and why a low top version in youth sizes is a deliberate act of continuity rather than a filler release.
The Retro Low OG keeps the original panel arrangement, toe cap, eyestay, quarter and heel cut separately and stitched over one another on a foam midsole, with a rubber outsole and the pivot circle at the forefoot. Red overlays on white with black trim give the hardest possible panel edges, so the construction is visible from across a room. White leather and a white midsole are the maintenance question, and on a child's shoe they will be tested immediately. Grade school pairs run on a smaller last with the same layout. There is no collar break in on a low, which makes this the easiest version of the shoe to hand to someone new.
