Culture Note™
Released on 27 February 2024 and part of On Running's Cloudhorizon line. This release has a mesh upper in Alloy/Frost. Every On model is a Cloud something, and the naming system is itself a house device: it tells you where a shoe sits before you have seen it. Cloudhorizon points outward, at ground that is not a running track, and Alloy Frost dresses that intent in cool grey and pale white rather than the earth tones outdoor shoes usually default to. The brand's whole logic goes back to Olivier Bernhard's garden hose experiment in Zurich in 2010, a hollow shape that cushions on landing and firms up for push off. Taking that idea off tarmac is the interesting move, because the same structural cushioning has to cope with uneven loading instead of the metronomic repetition of a road stride.
Build around the cool palette. For trail days, wear it with slim technical joggers or hiking shorts in charcoal and a light shell, keeping everything in the grey family so the frost tone stays the highlight. For town, try washed indigo denim with a cuff and a grey crew or quarter-zip, which lets it read as an outdoor shoe you did not change out of. It suits mixed surfaces, travel days and long walks better than fast track work. Pale uppers stain, so brush dry mud off rather than soaking it, and clear grit out of the pods with a stiff brush before it grinds. Air dry only, never near direct heat.
On's outdoor push comes from the same place as everything else it does, which is engineering rather than subculture. This is a company that grew out of triathlon and road racing, sponsors the On Athletics Club under coach Dathan Ritzenhein, and even built bobsleigh shoes for the 2022 Winter Olympics. Its cultural meaning now sits closer to design object than to street, and a grey and white outdoor shoe is the purest expression of that: it looks technical without shouting. In 2024 the company reported revenue of 2.32 billion Swiss francs, up 29.4 percent, which is what happens when a look this specific stops being niche.
CloudTec is the constant: a structural cushioning system where foam is engineered into specialised geometries rather than left to behave like a slab, so the pods compress horizontally as well as vertically and give multi-directional support through the stride. That multi-directional part is exactly what matters when the ground under you is not flat. The Alloy Frost colourway runs cool and light, greys against a frosted white, which shows contour rather than hiding it and will also show trail dust honestly. On does not smooth the sole into a solid wall, so you can see the cavities working. Read the shoe as an outdoor-leaning platform built on the same visible geometry the brand uses everywhere else.
