Culture Note™
Released on 10 January 2025 and part of On Running's Cloudmonster line. This release has a mesh upper in Alloy/Silver. On started in Switzerland when a former professional triathlete glued sections of garden hose to a shoe sole just to feel what a softer landing did. That hack became CloudTec, and CloudTec built the brand. The Cloudmonster is where On finally went big with the idea: the pods got oversized, the Helion superfoam got its softest tuning yet, and On had the max-cushion daily trainer it had never really made. Alloy Silver is the colorway that leans into the engineering instead of softening it, a cool metallic grey treatment that reads industrial rather than athletic, so the exposed pods look like hardware. If you want an On that actually feels plush underfoot, the Cloudmonster Alloy Silver is the pair to buy in India.
Two ways to run it. Daily miles: easy runs and long runs are where the Cloudmonster lives, so pair it with a low no-show sock and let the Speedboard do the rolling, since it is happier cruising than sprinting. Off-run: grey technical trousers or wide black nylon pants with a shell jacket, because Alloy Silver ties into a technical palette without needing a matching piece. On sizing, On lists the Cloudmonster true to size, but the last is narrow with a shallow toe box, so wide feet or thick socks should take a half size up. For care, never machine wash it. Pull the insole, brush the mesh with mild soap and cool water, and clear grit out of the CloudTec pods with a toothbrush so they keep compressing properly, then air dry out of direct sun.
The Cloudmonster landed at the moment running shoes stopped being only running shoes. That silhouette, all exposed pods and exaggerated sidewall, is readable from across a room, which is why it turns up on commutes and coffee runs as often as on training days. Inside running circles it changed the conversation about On, a brand that had a reputation for firm, plasticky rides until this shoe answered everyone asking for cushion. Alloy Silver pushes it further into the street. A metallic grey On sits closer to technical wear and gorpcore than to a classic trainer, and grey is the easiest chunky-shoe color to actually wear. This is the Cloudmonster that works as a wardrobe shoe, not just a training shoe.
The signature is the oversized CloudTec sole: hollow pods that collapse under load and spring back, tuned here in On's softest Helion superfoam so landings sink instead of slap. A Speedboard runs through the midsole and does the rolling for you, flicking the foot forward through toe-off so all that stack never feels sluggish. The upper is breathable engineered mesh built from 100 percent polyester across the vamp, tongue and linings, with a gusseted tongue that kills sideways slide and a loop-based lacing system that tightens the fit without hot spots. At roughly 275g in a men's US 8.5 it stays light for the amount of foam you are standing on, which is why it holds up on long easy miles.
