Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 28 June 2019 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/White-Sail-Gym Red. Black and red is the palette the whole line was born arguing about. When Jordan came into the NBA the uniform policy required shoes to be at least 51 percent white, and the shoe cited was the Nike Air Ship prototype he wore before the Air Jordan 1 released. Nike paid the 5,000 dollar per game fine and built the Banned advertising around the fight rather than redesigning anything. Black with gym red is the direct descendant of that posture: the Chicago red, black and white palette functions as a brand colour in itself. On a Retro High, the tallest and most argumentative cut of the shoe, it is the version of the Air Jordan 1 that still looks like a rule being broken.
Black and gym red is a statement shoe, so let it be the only loud thing. Raw indigo denim with a black leather bomber and a plain white tee is the direct route, cuffed so the red heel tab shows. For a sharper read, black pleated trousers, a black knit and a long grey coat turns the red into the single accent in the outfit. High tops do best laced through every eyelet: skipping the top pair kills the ankle support the cut exists for. Wipe the red leather with a slightly damp cloth before dirt sets, since pigment transfer works both ways. Store them upright and away from direct sun, which fades red faster than any other colour on the shoe.
This colourway sits closest to the campaign that taught the sneaker market that transgression sells. From there the shoe spread through hip hop, with 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Ice Cube and Jay-Z referencing Jordan and his sneakers, and through Nike's Spike Lee directed advertising, where Lee appeared as Mars Blackmon opposite Jordan. Air Jordan is also the shoe that created sneaker collecting at scale, with original 1985 pairs trading around 20,000 dollars on StockX. The darker record belongs here too: in the late 1980s the shoes were linked to robberies and assaults and some American schools banned them, which is part of why this palette still carries charge.
The Retro High is the full original outline: collar over the ankle, ankle Wings mark, wide toe box and a rubber cupsole with the sidewall stitched to the upper. In black and gym red the panelling does the work, because the colour split makes every seam visible and the Swoosh reads as a hard graphic rather than a shadow. Red panels bleed onto light socks when new and when wet, so wear dark socks for the first outings. Black leather hides scuffs but shows dust, which is the trade you accept.
