Designed by Bruce Kilgore and released on 31 January 2023 as part of Nike's Air Force 1 line. This release has a leather upper in Black/White/Black. Panda is the name people gave to black and white when the two are split so cleanly across a shoe that it reads as an animal marking rather than a colourway. On an Air Force 1 Low, that split falls neatly along the panels, with the Swoosh carrying the contrast against a white base. It is the sharpest version of a shoe that spends most of its life in plain white, and it changes the shoe's job: white on white disappears, while black on white asks to be noticed. The Air Force 1 has been a fixture of city dress since the 1980s, and this is the version that admits it is a design object.
Two builds. Monochrome: black trousers or dark denim with a white tee and a black jacket, the shoe repeating the outfit's own contrast at floor level. Softer: grey or stone chinos with a navy knit, where the black and white becomes the only hard edge in a muted palette. This colourway is more forgiving than triple white in a city, since the black panels absorb what the white shows. Air Force 1s run slightly large, so consider half a size down. Clean the white the same day it marks, use an eraser on the midsole, condition the black panels, and keep them out of long direct sun.
No Nike model has absorbed more of the brand's politics than this one. In September 2018 Nike built a long term campaign around Colin Kaepernick, who had knelt during the US national anthem, and the reaction included people burning product and condemnation from a police union, alongside public support from LeBron James and Serena Williams. Kaepernick later got his own branded line. This shoe is neutral in colour and anything but neutral in history.
Weight is what lets this shoe carry a hard two tone split. There is enough surface across the toe, the eyestay and the heel for black to sit against white in clean blocks, and enough thickness in the panels that the boundary stays crisp instead of rippling. Underneath, the cushioning is the sealed pressurised Nike Air unit, working out of sight rather than framed in a window as it was on the 1987 Air Max. High contrast doubles the maintenance. The white wants a foam cleaner and a soft brush, the black wants a damp cloth and a conditioner so it does not go grey, and the two should never be soaked at once, since that is precisely how one panel stains the other.
