    Origin

    chevron
Released on 19 March 2021 and part of the Crazy BYW line. This release has a textile upper in Core Black/Core Black/Core Black. The Crazy BYW is adidas's most architectural modern basketball shape, built around a visible pod system under the foot that makes the shoe look like it has been engineered in public. That appetite for visible engineering runs deep at adidas: the adidas 1 of 2005 was marketed as the world's first intelligent shoe, with a microprocessor running five million calculations a second to adjust cushioning, and springblade replaced foam with splayed blades. The 2.0 refines the silhouette, and Triple Black strips it of every contrast so the structure has to carry the shoe alone. Pharrell Williams is a designer collaborator here, and a full blackout execution is the most restrained decision available to him.

    Utility

    chevron
Recipe one: black tapered trousers with a slight break and a charcoal hoodie, so the pods under the foot are visible and the shoe reads as architecture. Recipe two: dark wash wide leg jeans and a black bomber, using the extra fabric to balance the shoe's mass instead of fighting it. Knit uppers on a black shoe hold dust in the texture, so brush lightly and regularly rather than washing. Never machine wash a shoe with a visible pod system underfoot, since water trapped in the tooling is hard to clear. Size to your usual basketball fit.

    Influence

    chevron
adidas effectively created the modern designer sneaker partnership, running it first with Yohji Yamamoto on Y-3 and Stella McCartney from 2004, then Jeremy Scott, Raf Simons and Alexander Wang, and extending it to musicians including Pharrell Williams, Bad Bunny and Beyonce. What separates the designer work from the brand's accidental cultural wins, like Run-DMC writing My Adidas unpaid in 1986, is intent. A Crazy BYW is not an archive shoe being reissued; it is a new silhouette built to be looked at. Triple Black is the collector's version of that, bought by people who want the shape and the association without the shoe announcing either from across a room.

    Construction

    chevron
The BYW build puts its cushioning system where you can see it, with pods sitting under the foot rather than hidden inside a midsole, which is a structural statement as much as a comfort one. The upper is knit and layered to keep weight down over that tooling, and the Three Stripes are integrated into the cage rather than applied on top, consistent with how adidas has used the mark structurally since acquiring it from Karhu Sports in 1952. Triple Black is the demanding version because it removes the colour contrast that usually explains a complicated shoe, forcing you to read it by shadow and surface change. Knit uppers on a blackout build also mean texture becomes the only visual variation.
