Culture Note™
Designed by Roger Federer and released on 17 September 2023 as part of the The Roger Pro line. This release has a mesh upper in White/Black. This is the first-generation Roger Pro dressed for a team tennis occasion. The line traces back to November 2019, when Roger Federer became a shareholder in On, and July 2020, when The Roger launched as a limited edition and gave a Zurich running company a lifestyle silhouette. The Pro took that name somewhere harder: a shoe made to be played in rather than admired. The Laver Cup edition is an event-specific make-up, which is why it feels dressier than a standard performance colourway, and why it will read as a marker of a particular week of tennis for anyone who follows the sport. If you like your court shoes with a story attached, this is the one that carries a date on it without printing one.
Play in it with classic tennis kit, white shorts or a skirt and a collared top, and a cushioned ankle sock so the low collar does not rub during drags. Off court, keep it preppy rather than sporty: flat-front chinos in stone or navy, a fine-gauge knit, no visible branding elsewhere, and it passes as a clean court sneaker. It belongs on hard and clay courts, not on trails or long walks, since the outsole rubber is tuned for a specific surface. Wipe the white with a damp cloth after each session before dust sets, and stuff the toe box when storing so the upper keeps its shape. Fit snug through the midfoot with a locked heel.
On's tennis credibility started with Federer as shareholder and collaborator and was made durable by the roster signed from March 2023, including world number one Iga Swiatek, Ben Shelton and Joao Fonseca, with Flavio Cobolli added in June 2024. Event editions matter in tennis in a way they do not in most sports, because the calendar is the culture. The wider point is how quickly this happened: On was founded in 2010, it was still a specialist runner's brand at the end of that decade, and it now shows up in the highest-visibility tennis fixtures. Owning an event make-up is owning a small piece of that acceleration.
A tennis shoe is a containment problem before it is a cushioning problem, and the Roger Pro is built low and wide compared with On's road models so the foot sits close to the court. CloudTec underneath is a structure, not a foam: pods engineered into the sole geometry that compress both vertically and horizontally, which suits a sport where load arrives from the side as often as from the front. The white base with event accenting keeps it inside tennis convention while marking it as a special make-up. Expect a firmer, flatter feel than a Cloudmonster or Cloudsurfer, with reinforcement concentrated where a player drags and pivots rather than where a runner rolls through.
