Released on 10 November 2023 and part of the Handball line. This release has a suede upper in Earth Strata/Off White/Gum. The Handball Spezial is one of adidas' indoor court shapes, and Earth Strata Gum is the colourway that takes it furthest from the gym. Earth strata is a muted clay brown, warm and dusty rather than rich, sitting over a gum sole that continues the same tonal family instead of contrasting with it. The result is a shoe that reads almost entirely as one colour, which is unusual for a silhouette built around a bold contrast stripe. adidas has made specialised shoes for individual events since Adolf Dassler worked out of a laundry room in Herzogenaurach, and the Spezial is a survivor of that logic, kept alive by adidas Originals long after the sport moved on.
Earth tones want other earth tones or full neutrality. Try brown wide leg cords with a cream knit for a fully tonal look where the gum sole ties the whole thing together, or go the other way with washed black denim and a grey sweatshirt so the clay brown becomes the only warm element. The slim low build makes this a good shoe under tapered trousers where a chunky sneaker would look wrong. Spray the suede before the first wear, brush after every few wears, and never machine wash. On the gum sole, clean early with mild soap, because embedded street grit turns gum permanently grey.
adidas Originals exists because people kept wearing the brand's sport shoes off the field. The Superstar and the Stan Smith became the base layer of European football terrace and casual dressing, and the indoor court silhouettes followed them out of the sports hall for the same reason: a flat sole, a slim upper and a stripe that everyone recognises. The Trefoil that marks this range was drawn in 1971 and launched for the 1972 Munich Olympics. A muted earth colourway is that heritage played quietly, for people who want the shape without the sports hall colour palette.
Suede across the upper in the clay tone, Three Stripes applied along the quarter, and a gum rubber outsole underneath. Gum is the traditional indoor court compound because it grips polished wood without marking it, and that same tackiness translates to good traction on smooth city surfaces. The upper is soft and low with a slim profile, so the shoe wraps close to the foot rather than propping it up. Suede in a light earth tone is the most demanding surface in this range: it takes water marks instantly, and once the nap flattens on the toe crease it does not fully recover. Treated before wear, it holds its tone well.
