Part of Nike's Zoom Fly 5 line. This release has a mesh upper in White/Black/Racer Blue. White, Racer Blue and Volt is the classic Nike running palette, three colours the brand has used together for decades because they read cleanly at speed and photograph well under floodlights. On the Zoom Fly 5 Premium they dress the training half of Nike's plated family. The Zoom Fly sits below the Vaporfly, the 2017 shoe that combined ZoomX foam with a full length carbon fibre plate and produced marathon gains peer research measured at up to 4.2 percent, and it exists so runners can train on plated geometry without spending race shoe money every six weeks. The Premium designation points at an upgraded upper rather than a different engine underneath.
Sessions: black or navy shorts with a white top, keeping the outfit clean so the blue and volt detailing carries the colour, and reserve this pair for the days you actually run fast. Casual: light grey sweats or pale denim with a plain white tee, since the palette is sporty enough to look deliberate off duty. Use it for tempo work, intervals, progression runs and race rehearsals rather than easy mileage, where the plate is wasted. Size to your normal Nike running length, snug through the midfoot. Clean the white upper quickly with cool water, mild soap and a soft brush, dry in shade with the insole removed, and never machine wash a plated shoe.
The white, blue and volt combination carries the visual memory of decades of Nike track and road kit, worn by a sponsored roster running from Steve Prefontaine, the brand's first endorsed track athlete, through Sebastian Coe, Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson, Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Allyson Felix. Volt in particular has become the brand's shorthand for speed, chosen originally because it is the shade the eye catches fastest. A plated trainer in team colours is Nike selling the aesthetic of elite racing to people doing Wednesday intervals, which is the same offer it has made since Just Do It arrived in 1988 and made the amateur the hero of the advertising.
Underneath, this is the durable end of the plated family: ZoomX, Nike's altered Pebax foam, tuned firmer and more hard wearing than the racing versions, wrapped around a full length plate that stiffens the midsole and drives the transition from midfoot to toe. The Premium build shows in the upper, with a more refined engineered mesh, cleaner overlays and better finished internal seams than a standard release, which matters over long sessions where a seam becomes a hotspot. The white base makes the Racer Blue and Volt detailing pop at the Swoosh and heel. Expect a firmer, heavier ride than a pure racer, and accept that a white upper on a training shoe is a maintenance decision.
