University Blue is North Carolina's colour, and North Carolina is Michael Jordan's university, still one of the college basketball programmes carrying Jordan Brand alongside Georgetown, Cincinnati and Michigan. On the Mid, the cut that keeps most of the original collar height without the full lace run of the High, the pale blue takes the Swoosh, collar and heel against a white body and produces the most quoted non Chicago palette in the line. The shape is still what Peter Moore drew with Bruce Kilgore before Nike put the shoe on shelves on 1 April 1985. What changes is the chapter it points to: the college years rather than the Bulls, the beginning rather than the peak.
Pale blue is easier than it looks. Run it with white trousers and a navy knit for a summer build where the shoe bridges the two, or with mid wash denim, a white tee and a grey overshirt for something you can wear five days a week. Keep other blues away from it unless they are much darker, since near matches look accidental. The Mid collar wants a cuffed or cropped hem so the blue at the ankle stays visible. Size true to length. Protect the leather, wipe the midsole daily in dusty conditions, and store away from windows because strong light will pull the shade unevenly.
The college link is the strongest cultural thread in this colourway, and it predates everything the brand became. Nike signed Jordan on 26 October 1984 for six years and 2.5 million dollars, roughly three times any other contract in the league, and unusually gave him a royalty on sales, a structure that by 2022 was reportedly returning between 150 and 256 million dollars a year to him while Jordan Brand generated about 5.1 billion dollars for Nike. University Blue is the colour of the player before any of that existed, which is why collectors treat it as the sentimental palette rather than the powerful one.
White leather carries the toe, quarter and midsole, with University Blue on the Swoosh, ankle collar and heel tab. The Mid collar is padded and sits above the ankle bone, so it holds a little more than a Low and needs the top eyelet laced to do so properly. Perforated toe box, foam midsole, rubber outsole. Pale blue leather is the hardest colour on this silhouette to keep sharp because it shows both dirt and fading, and the join between the blue panel and the white midsole is where marks collect first. Treat before first wear, clean lightly and often, and keep the pair out of long direct sun.
