Alexandre Mattiussi started AMI in Paris in 2011, at thirty, after years inside couture houses learning how menswear is actually cut. The origin story he tells is blunt: designing cashmere at Marc Jacobs, he could not afford the sweaters he was drawing, so he built a label for people like himself. The name carries his initials and reads as ami, French for friend. The first boutique opened in Paris in December 2012, and by 2013 he had taken the ANDAM Fashion Award. The Ami de Coeur line arrived later that decade, a heart with an A inside it, and it became the mark the house is now read by.
