Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 January 2025 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in White/Midnight Navy. Midnight Navy is one of the founding Dunk colour stories, the deep blue and white pairing that belongs to the model's original college programme logic, where each release carried a school's colours and the shoe worked as a uniform piece. The Dunk was a basketball shoe first, went out of production, and was pulled back into relevance by skateboarding before ending up as the most collected silhouette Nike makes. Navy is the version that survives every cycle of that history, because it is the one that reads as a plain shoe when the hype cools. It is the Dunk you buy to wear rather than to keep boxed, which is not a criticism of the shoe.
Navy and white is the most wearable Dunk combination there is. First: mid wash straight leg denim with a single cuff, a white tee and a navy cap, a fit that needs no thought and never looks wrong. Second: grey tailored trousers with a cropped hem and a white oxford shirt, smart casual styling where a navy leather shoe passes for something dressier than it is. Dunks fit narrow, so size up half for a wide forefoot. Condition the navy leather twice a year to stop it drying and cracking at the flex point, clean white panels with a soft brush and mild soap, and keep them out of prolonged sun so the midsole stays white.
The Dunk's authority comes from skateboarding rather than basketball. Nike SB made the model matter to a community that watched the brand closely, and that scrutiny cut both ways: in 2005 Nike SB appropriated Minor Threat's 1981 album art, drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye and apologised on 27 June 2005 before settling out of court. That episode rhymes with the 1987 Beatles Revolution ad, pulled in March 1988 after Apple Records sued. Meanwhile the broader picture held: from the 1980s Nike was a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion, and the Dunk eventually joined the Air Force 1 and Air Max as everyday dress rather than sports gear.
The Dunk build is honest and unchanged: panelled leather across the upper, a low basketball collar with modest padding, a rubber cupsole and a flat, grippy outsole. Navy leather against a white midsole and white panels means the shoe lives on contrast, and that contrast is what fades first, since the white sections grey and the midsole yellows with sun. Nike Air, the pressurised gas unit sealed inside the midsole, is the company's cushioning foundation, though the Dunk has always been bought for its shape rather than its ride. Leather creases across the toe box from the first wear. On navy that reads as character faster than it does on white.
