Nike SB has always had a sense of humour about money, which is convenient for a line whose shoes resell for multiples of retail. Big Money Savings runs that joke on the Dunk Low, dressing a skate shoe in the visual language of a discount store: value signage, bargain bin typography, the aesthetics of cheapness applied to something anything but cheap. The gag lands because Nike is the opposite of a discount brand. By 1980 it held roughly half the US athletic shoe market and went public, and it has priced from strength ever since. Putting savings on the panel of a shoe that will never be discounted is the sort of self aware move only the skate line gets to make.
Graphic heavy Dunks need plain clothes around them. Recipe one: loose black work pants, a plain white tee and a hooded flannel, a straight skate uniform that lets the panel graphics be the only pattern. Recipe two: baggy mid wash jeans with a solid crewneck sweatshirt in a colour pulled from the shoe, tying it together without competing. Do not add another printed garment. This is a skate park and weekend shoe first, with real board utility from the SB padding. Take your usual SB Dunk size. Clean printed areas with a damp cloth and light pressure rather than a brush, because scrubbing will lift the print long before it cleans the panel.
Nike's own pricing story in India is the punchline this shoe would enjoy. The brand entered in 1995 through a licensing agreement with Sierra Industrial Enterprises, now SSIPL, priced about 30 percent above competitors, reported no net profit from 2006 until the financial year ending 2019, and closed roughly 200 stores from 2017, leaving around 150 outlets against a 2010 target of 350 by 2015. Meanwhile Nike SB has spent its life negotiating what it is allowed to take from other people's culture, most sharply when its 2005 use of Minor Threat's album art drew a rebuke from Ian MacKaye and a Nike apology.
This is the SB spec Dunk Low, which means the tongue and collar padding is thicker than the lifestyle version and the forefoot is flat and broad for board feel, all sitting on a rubber tread whose grip first logic goes back to Bowerman's waffle iron. Themed pairs like this carry their concept in printed graphics, contrast stitching and hardware rather than in a changed shape, so nothing about the joke affects how the shoe wears. Printed panels are the weak point on any graphic Dunk: abrasion lifts print faster than it damages leather, so ollie contact points will show first. Rotate the pair rather than skating it daily if you want the graphics intact.
