    Culture Note™

Released on 25 March 2025 and part of the P-6000 line. This release has a mesh upper in Summit White/Vast Grey/Wolf Grey. Summit white with vast grey is running shoe language applied to a shoe nobody runs in any more. The P-6000 is built from the visual vocabulary of late 1990s and early 2000s Nike training footwear: layered panels, exposed technical detailing, a chunky sole and a silhouette that looks assembled rather than drawn. That aesthetic came from a period when Nike's engineering was visible by design, a habit that began when the Air Max made cushioning itself into a design feature in 1987. In white and grey, the layering is the entire point. Take the colour out and what remains is texture, panel edges and the mechanical look of a shoe built for a purpose it no longer serves.
Style it with straight leg light wash jeans and a grey sweatshirt so the shoe and the top share a tone and the outfit stays quiet. Or go technical: black nylon trousers, a white tee and a grey shell jacket, where the layered upper matches the layered clothing. Best for daily wear, long walking days, travel and casual work settings rather than actual running. Retro runners often fit slightly narrow, so if you are between sizes go up a half. Brush the mesh dry, clean overlays with mild soap on a cloth, and dry away from sunlight to stop the white going yellow.
Running silhouettes made a full return into fashion through the 2010s, and Nike had the deepest archive to draw from because it had been building running shoes since Blue Ribbon Sports opened in 1964 to import better shoes than American runners could otherwise get. Steve Prefontaine, the first track athlete the brand endorsed, remains its symbol of running as attitude, and the retro runner is that attitude worn without the running. The women's SE versions are where the material and colour experiments happen, which is why this silhouette turns up in wardrobes that would never touch a modern racing shoe.
Expect a mixed material upper, mesh with synthetic overlays, where the difference between panels is read as texture rather than as colour because everything sits in the same white to grey range. This is the mesh and overlay construction Nike used across its running range for decades, evolved through the company's long project of holding the foot with less material, which is the thinking that eventually produced Flywire cabling. The midsole is a chunky foam unit shaped for the retro running look, with rubber applied underfoot where wear happens. White and light grey panels will discolour, particularly the mesh, so this colourway needs regular attention.
