Origin
Bruce Kilgore came to Nike from car design, the Pontiac Fiero and the Chrysler K-Car, and in 1982 he built the first basketball shoe with an Air unit in the sole. He borrowed a slanted cut from hiking boots for flexibility, added a cupsole for durability, and put a circular Pivot Point tread on the outsole while everyone else ran herringbone. Nike pulled the Air Force 1 from shelves in 1984. Three Baltimore stores talked the company into keeping it alive for them alone, and the Color of the Month Club they invented is effectively where limited-edition sneaker drops began. The '07 is the everyday low-top descendant of that shoe. Next Nature is the '07 rebuilt around recycled material: same shape you already know, different inputs.
Utility
Air Force 1s run large. Go half a size down from your usual Nike size, unless you have wide feet, in which case stay true to size, because the toe box is generous and the upper stretches as it breaks in. Two ways to wear it: baggy straight-leg jeans with a cropped tee and a slouchy cardigan, letting the chunky sole anchor all that volume, or a mid-length skirt with crew socks pulled high, the styling that keeps this shoe in rotation season after season. It handles airports, long shopping days and campus walking. Cushioning is modest by modern standards though, so do not pick it for eight-hour standing shifts. Care is easy: soft-brush the toe perforations, wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap, use a melamine sponge on the midsole, and dry indoors away from heat.
Influence
The white-on-white Air Force 1 Low became the Harlem shoe in the mid nineties, which is where the Uptowns nickname comes from, and East Coast rappers with real reach, Jay-Z most of all, pushed it from neighbourhood status symbol to global default. Four decades on it is the most quietly universal sneaker there is, worn across ages and income brackets without needing any explanation. Next Nature is where that ubiquity meets Nike's Move to Zero commitments, and it matters that Nike put the programme on its highest-volume silhouette instead of a niche concept shoe. Buying the women's Air Force 1 '07 Next Nature gets you the exact shoe everyone already recognises, made with meaningfully less virgin material.
Construction
The build is the story here. At least 20 percent of the shoe by weight is recycled material, part of Nike's Move to Zero programme, and you can actually see it: the midsole and outsole carry the speckled pattern that comes from Nike Grind recycled rubber, so the sustainability sits on the shoe rather than on a hangtag. A Swoosh-wheel logo on the tongue and sockliner marks it as Next Nature. Everything else is Air Force 1 unchanged. A stitched-overlay upper with toe perforations that softens and picks up vintage character the more you wear it, a Nike Air unit inside the foam midsole for lightweight cushioning, a padded low-cut collar that stays sleek around the ankle, and the star-pattern rubber outsole that still grips wet tile.
