Stone Sage is a Foam Runner, the model that took the label's anti branding logic to its conclusion. Released on 26 June 2020, it has no laces, no tongue, no stitched panels and no logo, and it is moulded as a single object rather than assembled from parts. The colour name follows the convention the line has used since the beginning, borrowing from terrain and raw material the way Oxford Tan, Moonrock and Desert Rat did. Stone Sage is the muted grey green end of that palette, a colour chosen because it does not compete with the shape. Recognition here is entirely structural: you know what it is from the outline and the clawed cutaways, and from nothing else.
Grey green foam is easiest to wear when the rest of the outfit stays dry and textural. Recipe one: cropped washed linen trousers, an oversized white shirt worn open over a tank, and bare ankles, a warm weather fit where the shoe is the only structured element. Recipe two: grey heavyweight shorts and a faded army green tee, where the sage disappears into the palette and you get comfort without a colour clash. These are for summer, travel days, gym runs and the walk to somewhere casual, not for rain or formal rooms. Rinse under lukewarm water and air dry away from sunlight, since heat deforms moulded foam permanently. Take your true size, and expect a snug entry over the instep with no give.
The Foam Runner is where the label stopped being only a sneaker brand. Alongside the Slide, it crossed into general fashion and was copied across the mass market at every price point, to the extent that the shape became a generic category rather than one product. It did that inside a release culture the line itself created, where limited drops, bots, queues and resale turned launch day into an event. The commercial engine behind it closed on 25 October 2022, when adidas terminated the partnership following antisemitic public remarks by founder Kanye West, and later sold through remaining stock. Pairs available now come from that residual supply or from resale.
One piece injection moulding is the whole story. Upper, midsole, footbed and outsole are formed as a single body of EVA style foam, and Foam Runners were made partly from algae derived foam, which made the material itself part of the pitch. The perforations are functional, giving the closed shape somewhere to flex and letting air move through on warm days. Because there is no lacing and no adjustable closure, fit comes down to the moulded bed and the opening width, and the shoe either suits your foot volume or it does not. The tread is firm with a light spring, and the whole thing weighs very little in hand.
