Released on 1 January 2018 and part of adidas's Samba line. This release has a leather upper in Cloud White/Core Black/Clear Granite. The Samba OG belongs to the oldest instinct in the company: Adolf Dassler making purpose built shoes in his mother's laundry room in Herzogenaurach, watching athletes instead of guessing at them, then registering adidas AG in 1949 once the split with his brother was final. Cloud White is that instinct stripped of decoration. There is no colour blocking to read, no season to date it, just the flat low shape and the Three Stripes running the length of the panel, the mark Adi Dassler bought from Karhu Sports in 1952 for the equivalent of about 1,600 euros and two bottles of whisky. In white, the stripes stop being a logo and go back to being what they were first, a structural line stitched onto the upper.
Two ways to run it. Cropped straight leg denim with a white ribbed vest and a light grey overshirt lets the shoe sit as the cleanest thing in the outfit. Or wide black trousers with a black knit, which turns the white into a hard punctuation mark at the floor. Sizing runs narrow and long on this shape, so a half size down is common if you have a slim foot, and the stiff leather needs a week before it stops pressing at the little toe. For care, brush the suede toe dry and never soak it, wipe the leather with a damp cloth the same day a mark appears, and keep them off wet monsoon streets if you want the white to stay white.
adidas has twice been adopted rather than marketed into culture. The first time was sport, from Jesse Owens wearing Dassler handmade spikes at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The second was music: Run-DMC wrote My Adidas with nobody paying them, released it on 29 May 1986, and at Madison Square Garden that July told the room to hold up their shoes, which produced the first endorsement deal between a musical act and an athletic company. That is the lineage a plain white Originals silhouette sits inside. The Trefoil, drawn in 1971 for the 1972 Munich Olympics, marks exactly this part of the range, the shoes people wear because they choose to rather than because a sport requires it.
A smooth leather upper with a suede overlay across the toe, the Three Stripes applied along the quarter as reinforcement rather than as a sticker, and a low flat rubber outsole that keeps you close to the ground. Cloud White is the least forgiving finish adidas offers on this shape, because a pale leather records every crease across the vamp and every scuff at the toe box. That is not a flaw in the build, it is the point of it: the shoe ages visibly and quickly reads as yours. Expect the leather to soften and take the shape of your foot within a few wears, and expect the low profile to feel closer to a court shoe than to a cushioned trainer.
