Alexandre Mattiussi started AMI in 2011 after stints at Christian Dior, Givenchy and Marc Jacobs, and the founding story is unusually honest: while designing luxury cashmere at Marc Jacobs he worked out he could not afford the sweaters he was drawing. AMI means friend in French and doubles as his initials, which tells you the entire positioning before you see a single garment. The first Paris boutique opened in December 2012, the ANDAM Fashion Award followed in 2013, and Mattiussi joined the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode in 2016. The Ami de Coeur line launched in 2017 and became the thing the house is known for worldwide. This black oversized jersey t-shirt is that emblem at its most usable, a small red heart and an A on plain black cotton, nothing else asked of you.
Two ways to run it. Black tee, straight-leg cream or ecru trousers, brown leather loafers and one silver chain is the AMI-intended read, French and unbothered, where the red heart is the only colour in the fit. For heat, go wide pleated black shorts and low-profile white sneakers and let the tee be the whole outfit. On sizing, this is the oversized cut, so it already sits a size bigger in feel than a standard tee: take your usual size if you want the boxy drop-shoulder look, drop one if you want it closer to the body. Care is straightforward, it is machine washable, but turn it inside out, wash cold and skip the dryer, because heat is what kills an embossed chest logo and a black dye job faster than anything else.
The Ami de Coeur pulled off something rare: it made a logo tee feel like an in-joke rather than a billboard. The heart is small, red, and to anyone outside the conversation it just looks like a heart, which is precisely why it travelled. The commercial arc backs that up. AMI grew from 35 million euros in revenue to 300 million inside four years, Sequoia Capital China took a controlling stake in 2021, and the house passed 60 stores and 700 points of sale, later adding a Marais flagship in Paris and a first Brussels flagship. The black colorway is the version that carries the emblem furthest, because it strips the design back to one red mark and lets you decide how loud that is.
It is cotton jersey, cut with a crew neck and short sleeves, and unisex by design rather than by accident. The Ami de Coeur sits embossed at the chest, so the heart reads as raised texture against black instead of a flat print that cracks after ten washes, and there is tonal ami embroidery under the back neckline, the detail that quietly says what it is once a jacket covers the front. The cut here is the oversized one, which means the shoulder seam drops wide, the body runs boxy through the chest and the sleeve stops nearer mid bicep. On black that silhouette does the real work: it does not cling, it does not drape, it just holds a clean rectangle.
