Michael Kors filed for Chapter 11 in 1993 when the licensing partner behind the KORS line closed, and the founder spent the years from 1997 to 2003 as the first women's ready to wear designer at Celine in Paris, a separate job at another house, before relaunching his own label with outside investment. Menswear and accessories were the ground on which the second act was built. Saffiano is a cross hatched, textured leather finish, and the title tells you that is what you are getting here. The practical consequence matters more than the name: the grain resists the fine scratching that shows immediately on smooth calf, and it keeps its look through the friction of a pocket. The layout is a bifold with a removable passcase, so the card you present most often lives in a slim insert you can lift out without opening the main wallet. Black on textured leather also hides the darkening that palm oils cause along the fold. Nothing here is decorative: the object is card slots, a note compartment and an insert, executed cleanly.
