Origin
Released on 29 June 2023 and part of the Handball line. This release has a suede upper in Night Indigo/Crew Yellow/Gum. The Handball Spezial was built for an indoor court sport that Germany takes seriously and most of the world barely follows, which is exactly the kind of narrow brief adidas was founded on. Adi Dassler's method was making a purpose built shoe for one event rather than a general athletic shoe, and handball needed grip on polished wood, low profile contact and a sole that would not mark the floor. Night Indigo with yellow is a colourway that leans into the sport's origins rather than the shoe's later life in fashion: a deep, cool blue that sits close to black in low light, cut by a warm accent. It is a shoe that arrived in style culture through Manchester and Berlin rather than through a marketing plan.
Utility
Two ways. Terrace correct: straight leg jeans in a mid wash with a single turn up, a quarter zip or a knitted polo, and the yellow accent picked up somewhere small like a cap or a stripe on the sock. Or contemporary: black wide trousers stacked over the toe, a heavy grey sweat and the shoe left as the only colour in the fit. Good for daily wear, football, pubs and travel, less good for heavy rain since suede and standing water do not agree. The Spezial runs long and narrow, so go half a size down unless your foot is wide. Protect the suede before first wear, brush with a rubber suede brush in one direction, and clean gum soles with an eraser or a damp cloth before the dirt sets, since gum yellows and greys with age.
Influence
The Spezial is a terrace shoe, adopted by British and European football casual culture the same way the Superstar and the Stan Smith became the base layer of that wardrobe. adidas did not engineer that adoption any more than it engineered hip hop's embrace of the shell toe, which is the pattern with this brand: the archive gets picked up by a subculture and the company follows. Originals exists to serve exactly that, carrying the Trefoil that adidas designed in 1971 and launched for the 1972 Munich Olympics. Indigo and yellow speaks that terrace language fluently, a shoe that signals to people who know without announcing anything to people who do not.
Construction
Suede is the material that defines the Spezial, chosen because it takes abrasion on a court and keeps a soft hand rather than because it looks retro. The Three Stripes are stitched down the flank in the brand's oldest structural tradition, where the stripes reinforced the upper before they became a logo. Underneath sits the gum toned outsole the model has always run, a non marking rubber that gives you the tacky grip an indoor court demands and, on a night indigo upper, a warm contrast that stops the shoe reading as flat. The profile is low and slim, so it sits under the ankle bone and takes very little visual space, which is why it disappears so easily into an outfit.
