Alexandre Mattiussi spent years designing clothes he could not afford. He worked on Dior's 30 Montaigne menswear, was first assistant for menswear at Givenchy, then moved to Marc Jacobs, and the thing that finally pushed him out was realising he could not buy the sweaters he was drawing. AMI opened in 2011 on the opposite premise: Parisian clothes made for a friend rather than a collector. Ami means friend in French and doubles as his initials. The Ami de Coeur mark, a heart with an A inside it, arrived in 2017 and became the thing that made the brand famous. This black button down is the quiet version of that logo. The chest embroidery is tonal, so the heart sits black on black and reads as texture until someone looks twice.
