Part of On Running's Cloudtilt line. This release has a mesh upper in Pear/Ice. Pear Ice is the Cloudtilt at its most seasonal: a soft green yellow set against a cold pale tone, the kind of pairing that only works on a silhouette confident enough to be quiet elsewhere. The Cloudtilt is On's everyday shape, built to take the brand's exposed pod architecture out of the running context and into normal clothes. The architecture itself dates to Zurich in 2010, when Olivier Bernhard, a former Swiss Ironman champion, cut a garden hose into sections and glued them to a sole to prove a hollow shape could land soft and push off firm. Nike had already turned him down, so he built the company with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti.
Soft green needs either neutrals or one confident partner. Recipe one: ecru wide leg trousers, a white tee and a light denim jacket, a summer build where the pear tone acts as the only colour. Recipe two: grey shorts with a black tee and a cream cap, letting the shoe carry the whole palette from the ground up. Wear them for warm weather city days, weekends, markets and travel, not for training or wet ground. Fit true to size with a slim midfoot, and a thin sock keeps the collar sitting properly. Protect the pale upper before wearing, clean with foam rather than water, and keep them out of strong sun so the green does not shift.
On sits closer to design object than to street, and pastel colourways are how a technical brand talks to people who buy on eye rather than on spec. The crossover moment was Roger Federer taking an equity stake in November 2019, followed by The Roger as a limited edition in July 2020. Since then On has kept its sporting spine, with the On Athletics Club under Dathan Ritzenhein and a tennis roster including Iga Swiatek, Ben Shelton and Joao Fonseca from March 2023. A pear green Cloudtilt is aimed squarely at the audience that arrived after the crossover, and it is unapologetic about it.
The pods are the logo and the mechanism at once. On describes CloudTec as a structural cushioning system that engineers foam into specialised geometries, so the cavities compress horizontally and vertically, absorbing impact and providing multi directional support through the stride rather than a single plane of give. A pale green colourway shows this off well, because light tones let you read every cavity edge. It also means dirt has nowhere to hide. Treat the upper before the first wear, clean marks the day they happen rather than letting them set, and use a soft brush on the sole walls instead of soaking a structured midsole in water.
