Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 20 February 2025 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a leather upper in White/Black/Dark Pony. Dark Pony is a warm, deep brown, and brown is the colour Jordan Brand reaches for when it wants a shoe to sit with clothes rather than with kit. On the Jordan 1 Mid SE that reads as a deliberate move away from team colours: no Chicago palette, no contrast graphics, just a rich tone across a shape everyone recognises. The Mid exists because the 1985 silhouette became a family once the line turned into its own Nike division, with cuts and price points for every kind of wearer. The SE tag gives the design permission to change materials and finishing, which is what makes a brown pair feel considered instead of like a colour swap.
Brown wants tan, cream and navy rather than black. Wear it with stone or khaki trousers, a cream knit and a navy overshirt for a full autumn palette, or dress it slightly with dark brown corduroy trousers and a charcoal crewneck so the shoe reads as the intentional warm note. Avoid pairing it with black denim, which flattens the tone. The Mid's collar makes it the easiest cut to wear under a slightly cropped trouser. Size true, expect a stiff first week, and treat it like a leather shoe: a soft brush after wear, a conditioner every few months, and paper in the toe to hold the shape.
This line stopped being sportswear a long time ago. Jordan Brand's collaborators run from Off-White under Virgil Abloh and Dior to Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS, and that design side is where earthy, wardrobe led colourways come from. The Jumpman itself is a house mark now rather than a team logo, a silhouette Peter Moore had Jordan recreate in Bulls gear. A dark brown Mid is the everyday expression of the same shift: a shoe that reads as leather goods first and basketball second, which is how the model earned its place in wardrobes that own no other sneaker.
The Mid keeps the Jordan 1 pattern with a collar that sits between the High and the Low, the layered panel construction and the Wings mark at the ankle. On an SE, the finish is the story: warm brown panels catch light differently across a napped or treated surface, and the seams read darker, which gives a single colour shoe visible structure. Underfoot it is a flat cupsole, firm and stable, with no visible Air unit, since that entered the line from the Air Jordan II. Brown is forgiving about dust and unforgiving about water marks. Brush it dry, keep it out of rain where you can, and condition the panels so the tone stays deep rather than chalky.
