NIKE DUNK HIGH RETRO PREMIUM CLASSICS 50 YEARS OF HIP-HOP
NIKE DUNK HIGH RETRO PREMIUM CLASSICS 50 YEARS OF HIP-HOP
Culture Note™️ / ملاحظة الثقافة
Origin
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 1 June 2023 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Smoke Grey/Black/Beach/Black/White. Nike's relationship with hip hop was not planned in a boardroom. It arrived through basketball, after the company signed Michael Jordan in 1984 and put Spike Lee on screen as Mars Blackmon to sell the shoes, and within a few years Air Jordans, Air Force 1s and Air Max models had become fixtures of urban and hip hop fashion. A Dunk High Retro Premium marking fifty years of the culture is the company acknowledging a debt rather than announcing a partnership. That distinction matters, because the brand did not build hip hop's relationship with sneakers, it was chosen by it, and it has spent decades benefiting from a decision that other people made.
Utility
Two ways to run it. Baggy denim over the collar with a heavy graphic tee and a bomber, the proportions the shoe was drawn for, letting the high top sit half hidden. Or slim black trousers cuffed above the collar with a plain black knit, which exposes the whole silhouette and treats it as the loudest thing you are wearing. High tops need the hem decided deliberately, above or well over, never resting on the collar. Dunks run slightly long, so size true. For care, treat premium materials before first wear, brush rather than wipe any nubuck or textured panel, and keep the pair off wet streets because layered uppers dry unevenly.
Influence
Music has been the most charged part of Nike's cultural record, and not always to its credit. The company used the Beatles' Revolution in 1987 without Apple Records' approval, was sued, and pulled the ads in March 1988. Nike SB appropriated Minor Threat's album artwork in 2005, drew a public rebuke from Ian MacKaye, and apologised. Set against that, a release built explicitly to mark fifty years of hip hop is the company doing the acknowledgement properly rather than borrowing quietly. Just Do It, written by Dan Wieden in 1988, sits in the Smithsonian; the culture this shoe marks put those shoes on far more feet than any slogan did.
Construction
The high top Dunk gives a graphic release more room to work with than the low does: a taller quarter panel, a collar that can carry separate material, and a longer Swoosh across the side. Premium classics builds change the materials and the finish rather than the pattern, so expect the surfaces to be the point and the shape to be untouched. Underneath sits the standard Dunk platform, a flat rubber sole and a firm ride with no cushioning technology, which is why the shoe stands well and runs badly. A high collar also changes how you wear it, since the shoe needs to be laced properly to hold your ankle instead of flapping.
