Origin
Designed by Kanye West and released on 7 March 2024 as part of the Yeezy Slides line. This release has a eva upper in Dark Onyx/Dark Onyx/Dark Onyx. This is the Slide scaled down for infants, and the shrinking is more interesting than it sounds. The Slide arrived in December 2019 as an argument about reduction: one moulded shape, no laces, no logo, no stitching, nothing to read. Applied to a child's foot that argument becomes purely practical, since a shoe with nothing to fasten and nothing to come undone is the easiest possible first footwear. Dark Onyx keeps the terrain and material naming tradition the label used from the beginning, alongside Pirate Black and Moonrock, and a deep near black in a kids size is simply the most forgiving colour you can choose. It is the least glamorous item in the catalogue and one of the most sensible.
Utility
For infants the recipes are about the adult doing the dressing. First: cotton shorts or a romper with bare feet, for summer, beach and pool, where the whole point is rinse and go. Second: soft joggers with a thick cotton sock, which stops the moulded footbed feeling cold indoors and improves grip inside the strap band. Occasion: home, holidays, quick trips out, not long walks or running around on wet tile because foam soles get slippery when soaked. Fit runs generous, so check that the foot is not sliding forward under the band before buying up a size. Care: rinse with water, wipe with a cloth and mild soap, air dry fully out of direct sun, and never machine wash.
Influence
The Slide is one of two shapes, with the Foam Runner, that carried this design language out of sneaker culture and into general fashion, and infant sizing is the clearest sign of how completely that crossover happened. A silhouette that started in a limited drop culture of queues, bots and resale ended up as everyday family footwear. That happened inside a partnership adidas terminated on 25 October 2022, after Kanye West's antisemitic public remarks, which the company stated were unacceptable, hateful and dangerous and violated its values. Yeezy now operates independently, and adidas era product like this exists as remaining stock rather than as a current range.
Construction
Injection moulded one piece construction means the footbed, body and strap band are a single object, the same process the label used for the Foam Runner. For a small child that translates directly into safety and durability: nothing stitched to come apart, no laces to trip on, no eyelets to catch, and a surface that can be rinsed under a tap. Dark Onyx is coloured through the material rather than surface printed, so scuffs from crawling and dragging show as texture rather than as chipped paint. The band holds by tension rather than adjustment, so getting the size right is the entire fit question. There is no logo anywhere on it.
