Culture Note™
Designed by Peter Moore and released on 7 August 2020 as part of the Air Jordan 1 line. This release has a suede upper in Neutral Grey/White/Metallic Silver. CO.JP is Jordan Brand's Japan exclusive designation, and Tokyo has been the label attached to more than one Air Jordan 1 released under it over the years. What all of them share is the High OG cut, which keeps the original 1984 proportions Peter Moore set with Bruce Kilgore, and a market that treated the AJ1 as a design object long before the rest of the world caught up. Japanese exclusive releases sit close to the beginning of sneaker collecting as a global activity, and the AJ1 is the shoe that made that activity mass rather than niche. Without the specific make up in front of you, what is certain is the shape, the era it points at, and the reason a Japan only release still commands attention.
Recipe one, for any neutral CO.JP make up: charcoal trousers with a clean break, a black knit and a grey coat, letting the High shape carry the outfit. Recipe two: straight leg indigo denim, a white tee and a navy jacket, the standard frame that suits almost every AJ1 arrangement. Highs want a hem that stops above the collar so the silhouette stays readable. Fit runs true with a narrow toe box that opens after a week. Confirm the exact colourway before buying, since CO.JP make ups differ significantly in material and therefore in how carefully you need to treat them.
Japan mattered to this line early. Air Jordan is the shoe that turned collecting into a mass activity, with original 1985 pairs reaching around twenty thousand dollars on resale platforms and the wider market valued near two billion dollars, and regional exclusives were one of the engines of that scarcity economy. The brand's collaboration programme later formalised the same logic across streetwear and luxury with Off-White under Virgil Abloh, Dior, Comme des Garcons, Supreme and KAWS. A CO.JP release belongs to the earlier, quieter version of that story, when limited distribution alone was enough to make a shoe significant.
The High OG framework is consistent regardless of make up: leather panels over a rubber cupsole, a padded ankle collar and the Wings mark that identifies the earliest era of the line. The AJ1 predates the Nike Air cushioning that entered the line from the second model, so support comes from collar height and lacing rather than from anything underfoot, and the ride is firm and direct. Care follows the material rather than the name. Foam and a soft eraser for the midsole sidewall, leather conditioner at the toe flex point once or twice a year, air drying only. Never force dry a cupsole shoe, because heat is what separates the bond between sole and upper.
