Designed by Peter Moore and released on 3 June 2021 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in White/Team Green/White/Total Orange. This is the Michigan State block: Spartan green against white, one of the most recognisable school palettes in American athletics, laid across the Dunk exactly as the model intends. The silhouette has one structural idea, a base panel and a contrasting overlay, and university colours are the reason that idea exists. Everything else the Dunk has done since, the food names, the patchworks, the artist projects, is a departure from this. Nike built its home market on the understanding that American sport is tribal at the school level long before it is professional, and a green and white court shoe is that understanding with no marketing attached to it at all.
Deep green and white is easier to wear than most team pairings because green functions as a neutral in menswear. Try stone chinos with a white tee and a navy overshirt, or black wide leg denim with a cream knit for something colder. Avoid other greens in the same outfit, since matching a specific team green almost never works. This is a dry weather, daytime shoe: white leather and monsoon water do not mix. Sizing on the Dunk runs long and narrow, so half down suits most feet. Clean the white base weekly rather than monthly and the pair will hold its look for years.
By 1980 Nike held roughly half the US athletic shoe market and went public, and it got there by selling identity as much as equipment. College colour shoes are the purest form of that: no athlete endorsement, no technology story, just a palette that means something to a specific set of people and reads as pure colour to everyone else. It is a strategy Nike has never abandoned, and it sits underneath the professional deals, including the on court uniform supply agreement with the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League that has run since 2017.
Leather base panels with leather overlays carrying the green, padded collar and tongue, foam sockliner, rubber cupsole with the pivot circle. A deep saturated green against white is a high contrast build, which means the white is the panel doing all the work on how the shoe looks: keep it clean and the green looks richer, let it grey and the whole shoe drops a grade. Use a white specific cleaner on the base only and a barely damp cloth on the coloured overlays. Underfoot the Dunk is deliberately unsophisticated, flat and firm and close to the ground, and the vamp will crease inside the first week and then stop changing.
