Designed by Designer. This release has a upper material upper. The Air Rift is the strangest shoe Nike has kept in production. Where the rest of the catalogue chased structure and cushioning stacks, the Rift went the other way, a minimal, sandal adjacent runner with a divided forefoot and a strap instead of a conventional lacing system. It has always attracted people who find normal sneakers too loud, both visually and physically. NikeSKIMS puts it back into circulation through a partnership aimed at a different audience to the one that bought it originally. Black is the version that makes the shape read as clothing rather than as sports equipment, because with no colour to distract you, all you see is the outline, which is the whole reason the model still matters.
The split toe is the point, so let it be visible. First: a black midi skirt or wide leg black trousers with a cropped hem, a fitted black top, everything monochrome so the silhouette carries the interest. Second: cropped straight leg denim, a loose grey knit and bare ankles in warm weather, the fit this shoe was always secretly designed for. It suits walking, warm days and travel rather than sport. The split toe is not compatible with normal socks, so plan around bare feet or a split toe pair. Wipe with cold water and a soft cloth, air dry away from heat, and keep the strap closure free of grit so it keeps holding.
Nike's most interesting products have usually come from running, and its willingness to build an odd shoe comes from the same place as its willingness to build a waffle sole in a kitchen. Steve Prefontaine was the first track athlete endorser and remains a statue at Nike headquarters, the symbol of running as attitude rather than sport, and Just Do It, from 1988, gave the company a voice beyond competition. Minimal and unusual silhouettes ride that second track, the one where sport clothing became ordinary clothing through 1990s and 2000s athleisure. A partnership release puts the Rift in front of people who never saw it as a running shoe at all.
The Rift's defining feature is its split forefoot, a construction that lets the foot spread and move in a way a sealed toe box does not. That single decision drives everything else: a soft, low structure upper, a strap closure rather than laces, and a low profile sole that keeps you close to the ground. Nike's cushioning tradition rests on Nike Air, a pressurised gas unit sealed into the midsole, and its fabric platform on Dri-FIT moisture wicking material. In black, textile and synthetic panels are hard to tell apart at a glance, so clean the whole upper by the same gentle method rather than assuming any panel can take a scrub.
