Part of On Running's Cloudmonster line. This release has a mesh upper in Black/Magnet. This is the original Cloudmonster, the shoe that proved On could build something maximal without abandoning the sensation it was founded on. That sensation goes back to a garden hose in Zurich in 2010, when Olivier Bernhard cut the hose into sections, glued them to a sole and tested whether a hollow shape could cushion on landing then firm up for push off. Nike had passed on the idea, so he built it with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti instead. Black Magnet is the restrained way to wear the loudest shoe in the range: a black upper with a grey magnet tone through the sole, so the enormous geometry shows up as shadow and edge rather than as a colour block. The women's build keeps the volume proportional.
Black on black with a grey break is the most wearable maximal sneaker there is. Recipe one: black leggings or slim joggers with an oversized grey sweatshirt, so the magnet tone in the sole answers the top rather than fighting it. Recipe two: dark wide leg denim with a stacked hem, a white tee and a black bomber, where only the pod shadows show. Use them for easy road runs, long walks, recovery days and shifts on your feet, not for court sports. Size true to size and expect a snug heel with a generous forefoot. Clear grit from between the pods weekly, wash laces separately, and let them air fully between wears so the black upper does not hold odour.
On's rise came from endurance sport, not from a scene: triathlon, road racing, the On Athletics Club under Dathan Ritzenhein, even bobsleigh shoes for the 2022 Winter Olympics. Then Roger Federer took an equity stake in November 2019 and put his name on The Roger in July 2020, and the brand became something people chose on looks. The Cloudmonster is where those two lines meet, a genuinely cushioned running shoe whose profile did as much work on the street as it did on the road. It is also the shoe most often lined up against Hoka, On's closest rival in the US performance running category, where On holds roughly 6.6 percent.
Hexagonal CloudTec pods are the Cloudmonster's specific answer, and they behave differently from the pods on the everyday Clouds: they load energy as you land and unleash it as you leave the ground. The system is structural, foam engineered into cavity geometry, so a very tall sole still has direction to it instead of feeling like standing on a cushion. Compression happens horizontally as well as vertically, which is what keeps a stack this size from rolling under you. Black Magnet places the grey where the pods catch light, so the engineering stays readable at arm's length, and it hides road film better than the pale Monster colourways ever will.
