In December 2021 Nike acquired RTFKT, a studio that made sneakers which existed as digital objects before they existed as physical ones. The Dunk Genesis is what came out of that purchase: a Dunk Low rebuilt as an avatar's shoe and then produced for feet, here in the Clone X finish and capped at an edition of 5849. That number is the shoe's identity, printed into the release rather than into the material. It is the strangest thing Nike has done with the Dunk, a silhouette otherwise weighed down with basketball history, and it belongs to a company that also worked with artist Takashi Murakami on digital product in 2022.
First: treat it as an object with an outfit around it. All black, slim or straight, no other logos, so the sculpted upper is the only thing with shape. Second: full white or grey technical wear, which is the register the shoe was designed in and where its surface finish reads as intended rather than as odd. Realistically this is a low mileage pair: wear it dry, indoors or on clean pavement, and keep the numbered packaging intact, because an edition of 5849 is worth exactly as much as its provenance. Clean with a soft dry cloth, avoid solvents and brushes entirely, and store out of direct sunlight to protect the finish.
Nike's history of partnership has usually meant buying rather than borrowing: Converse in 2003 for 309 million dollars, Hurley in 2002, and earlier Cole Haan, Bauer, Starter and Umbro, all of which were later sold. RTFKT, acquired in December 2021, was the first purchase aimed at a product that had no physical form at all. Set against the brand's older cultural moments, the 1984 Jordan signing, the Air Max window of 1987, Just Do It in 1988, this is Nike arguing that the next sneaker culture happens on screens first. Whether that turns out to be right, the Genesis is the artefact of the attempt.
Everything here is a translation. The Dunk Low's panel geometry, its stitched Swoosh and its low collar are preserved as reference points, then rendered in materials and surfaces chosen to look rendered, which is why a Genesis pair reads as a smooth, sculpted object rather than a cut and sewn one. Underneath is still rubber, part of the same outsole engineering line Nike has run since Bowerman's waffle iron. The edition of 5849 means this is a numbered run, so the box, the tags and any accompanying credential are part of the product, not packaging. Handle it as a collectible first: surfaces built to mimic digital finishes scuff differently from leather and rarely take a wet clean well.
