Alexandre Mattiussi started AMI in Paris in 2011, at thirty, after years inside couture houses learning how menswear is actually cut. The origin story he tells is blunt: designing cashmere at Marc Jacobs, he could not afford the sweaters he was drawing, so he built a label for people like himself. The name carries his initials and reads as ami, French for friend. The first boutique opened in Paris in December 2012, and by 2013 he had taken the ANDAM Fashion Award. The Ami de Coeur line arrived later that decade, a heart with an A inside it, and it became the mark the house is now read by. This sky blue organic cotton pique polo is that logo in its easiest register, a summer colour on the piece that carries it cleanest.
Two ways to run the sky blue. Daytime: tuck it into pleated cream or stone trousers with loafers, no belt drama, and let the heart be the only graphic in the fit. Evening: leave it out over straight indigo denim with white leather sneakers, top buttons open, sleeves sitting mid bicep. It is a genuinely good office-to-dinner shirt for Indian weather, because pique breathes and a pale blue does not telegraph sweat the way navy or black will. On sizing, AMI's own guidance is that men take their usual size and women go one down. Wash at 30 degrees on gentle, skip the tumble dryer and the dry cleaner, cool iron only, and keep it away from chlorine, which will pull the blue long before it touches the embroidery.
AMI sits deliberately between luxury and streetwear, French cuts with the coldness taken out, and the heart logo is what made that legible from across a room. The numbers followed the logo: revenue moved from 35 million euros in 2019 to around 300 million by March 2023, and Sequoia Capital China took a controlling stake in 2021. By then the brand ran over 60 stores and more than 700 points of sale, with real weight in New York, China and Japan. Flagships kept landing, the Paris Marais store in February 2025 and Brussels in November 2025. Womenswear launched in 2019, which is part of why this polo is cut unisex and sits correctly on anyone.
The body is organic cotton pique, cotton knitted into that fine waffle grid, which is why a pique polo moves air in a way a jersey tee never will. In sky blue the texture also breaks up the colour so it reads soft instead of flat. The cut is classic and unisex, straight through the body, traditional collar, short sleeves. The Ami de Coeur heart is embroidered at the chest and a tonal AMI embroidery hides under the back neckline, while the half placket closes on mother-of-pearl buttons, the detail that separates this from a mall polo. Centre back length runs roughly 64cm at XS and 68cm at M. Made in Portugal.
