Released on 1 July 2024 and part of Hoka's Speedgoat 6 line. This release has a woven upper in Galactic Grey/Blue. Speedgoat is the model that carries Hoka's mountain reputation, and Galactic Grey is a quiet way to wear something with a loud record. The line is named for the terrain it was built to handle, and it belongs to the part of the range where the founding idea came from: Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard started the brand in Annecy in 2009 specifically because they wanted to run downhill faster, and oversized cushioning was their answer. Grey removes the alarm colours trail shoes usually wear and leaves the geometry to do the talking, which suits a sixth version of a model that no longer has to introduce itself.
Recipe one, mountain day: black tights or shorts, a wind shell, a light vest pack, with the grey shoe blending into the rock and scree. Recipe two, off duty: dark denim or olive trousers with a grey crew and a technical jacket, where the shoe reads as outdoor gear rather than running kit. Use it for technical trail, hill running, long hikes and rough weather rather than fast road work, where the tread will wear down quickly. Fit true to size and tighten the midfoot before a descent so your foot does not slide into the toe box. Clean the outsole after every off road outing and dry it fully.
The brand's credibility was built exactly where this shoe is meant to be used. Cushioning on long mountain descents was decisive rather than cosmetic, and Hoka became a mainstay at races like Western States and UTMB before becoming UTMB's title sponsor. Jim Walmsley, signed after his 2016 Western States run, is a multiple champion there and in 2023 became the first American man to win UTMB, setting a course record in prototypes of the Tecton X 3, while Mike Wardian races as another of the brand's sponsored ultrarunners. A Speedgoat is the model most ordinary runners buy to stand in that lineage, and grey is the version that will not look dated.
Technical trail asks more of a shoe than road does: the tread has to bite on loose, wet and rocky ground, and the midsole has to keep absorbing hits long after your legs stop helping. Hoka's house geometry, a low heel to toe drop with a rounded sole, keeps momentum going forward through terrain that constantly interrupts your rhythm. The heel is cradled inside the midsole walls rather than perched above them, which is where a tall trail shoe finds stability without stiffening up. Grey hides dust and dried mud well. Rinse grit out of the lugs while it is still soft, brush the upper rather than soaking it, and always dry in shade so the foam is not cooked.
