Kenzo Lucky Tiger sweatshirt (black)
Kenzo Lucky Tiger sweatshirt (black)
Culture Note™️ / ملاحظة الثقافة
Origin
Designed by Designer. This piece is made in upper material. Kenzo Takada opened his first Paris store in the Galerie Vivienne arcade in 1970, the same year Nigo was born in Japan. Five decades later LVMH handed Nigo the house, and for his debut collection he staged the Fall Winter 2022 show inside that exact arcade. The Lucky Tiger came out of that collection. Takada built his world around two animals, the elephant and the tiger, and Nigo redrew the tiger so it reads like ukiyo-e, the Japanese woodblock prints, instead of a flat logo. That single graphic now sits beside Takada's elephant as a permanent house mascot rather than a seasonal print. The black Kenzo Lucky Tiger sweatshirt is the version that puts every bit of attention on the embroidery itself.
Utility
Two ways to run it. Weekend: over a white tee with straight leg black denim and chunky white sneakers, sleeves pushed up so the ribbed cuffs bunch at the forearm. Smart casual: layered under an unstructured wool overcoat with pleated grey trousers and leather derbies, where the drop shoulder gives you room to do that without pulling across the back. On fit, classic with a drop shoulder means relaxed but not oversized, so take your usual size and go up one only if you want the boxier Nigo proportion. Care is strict because embroidery on cotton distorts easily: wash at 30 degrees on a mild cycle, no bleach, no dry cleaning, no tumble dryer, dry flat in the shade, and iron low while avoiding the tiger. Turn it inside out to wash and the stitching stays raised.
Influence
Nigo built A Bathing Ape before this. LVMH handing him Kenzo in September 2021 was the clearest signal yet that the wall between streetwear and a Paris maison had come down for good, and his Fall Winter 2022 debut was the most anticipated show of that week. The Lucky Tiger was what everyone carried out of it. That matters for a Kenzo sweatshirt in particular, because the tiger sweatshirt is the piece this house is recognised for worldwide, the one item people with no interest in fashion can identify across a metro car. Taking it in black, with the tiger embroidered instead of screen printed, is the version that ages rather than dates, and it keeps the graphic legible long after a printed one would have flaked.
Construction
The body is 100 percent cotton in a light, unbrushed molleton, and unbrushed is the spec that decides how you will actually wear it: no fleecy pile inside means this works nine months of the year in most of India instead of sitting in a cupboard until December. The cut is classic fit with a crew neck and a drop shoulder, so the sleeve seam falls down the arm and the body reads relaxed, not oversized. Ribbed cuffs and hem hold the edges so the sleeves do not bell out after a season. The Lucky Tiger at the chest is embroidered rather than printed, which is why it has depth and why it cannot crack or peel, and the logo at the back is embroidered too. Made in Portugal.
