Released on 6 August 2019 and part of the Adilette line. This release has the White/Black colourway. An all white Adilette Lite is the least amount of product adidas can sell you and still have it be unmistakably adidas. There is a band, a footbed, a sole and three stripes, and the stripes carry the whole identity. That is only possible because of a purchase rather than a design: Adi Dassler bought the Three Stripes trademark from Finnish maker Karhu Sports in 1952 for the equivalent of about 1,600 euros and two bottles of whisky, then spent the rest of his life calling adidas the three stripes company. On a white slide with white stripes, the mark reads as texture and shadow rather than as contrast, which is the quietest version of that identity available. Style code EG9841.
All white slides go with summer clothing and very little else. Wear them with linen shorts and a plain tee for a hot weather uniform, or with loose track pants and an oversized shirt for the version you wear to run errands. They are correct for the pool, the beach, a gym changing room and the ten minutes after any sport, and wrong for a long day of walking, since there is minimal arch support. Rinse them in fresh water after chlorine or salt, both of which dull white synthetic surfaces, and scrub the footbed with mild soap regularly, because on an all white slide that is the part that ages first.
adidas has run India as a priority growth market with local ambassadors rather than imported ones, signing Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh in 2015, and reported figures from 2018 show 436 company owned and franchise stores across the country. In a market with that kind of heat and that kind of footprint, the slide is not a poolside accessory, it is a daily shoe, worn to the shop, on a commute, around a home. That is the useful thing about the Three Stripes: they are legible on a product with almost no design to it, so the cheapest item in the range still carries the whole brand.
A slide is a moulded product with nothing to break in and nothing to fail at a seam, which is why it lasts and why it is cheap to make. The Lite version is the slimmer, lighter build, with a thinner footbed and less material through the band than the classic Adilette, so it packs flat and dries fast. All white means the stripes are defined by the moulded relief rather than by colour, so the shoe looks like a single piece from a distance. It also means the footbed will show every mark. Expect flexible, light and water friendly rather than supportive or cushioned. Style code EG9841.
