Released on 21 June 2024 and part of New Balance's 1906 line. This release has a mesh upper in Blue Shadow/Black. Action Bronson has produced several New Balance collaborations, including a 990v6 Baklava, and Medusa Azul on the 1906R continues that habit of giving a shoe a name that sounds like a dish or a myth rather than a product. The 1906R is the right platform for it, because the model revives New Balance's early 2000s performance running language, all hard geometry and engineered panels, and a collaborator with a strong personal palette can push that architecture somewhere the brand would not go alone. This is New Balance's collaboration model in miniature: designers and independents given room, rather than mass celebrity attached to a logo.
A collaboration blue is the loudest thing you should be wearing. Recipe one is neutral ground: grey sweatpants and a white tee, letting the azul tones be the only colour in the outfit and reading as deliberate. Recipe two is tonal blue: navy nylon trousers with a washed denim shirt, building around the shoe rather than against it. Avoid competing prints. This is a daytime and casual pair rather than an evening shoe, and the technical upper handles city walking well. Mixed materials need mixed care: brush the mesh dry, use mild soap on a damp cloth for the synthetic overlays, avoid solvents on coloured panels, and dry away from direct heat.
New Balance's collaboration programme is built on independents rather than on endorsement deals. Named partners include Aime Leon Dore, whose founder Teddy Santis was appointed creative director of Made in USA in April 2021, British designer Paul Smith on a 576 released in June 2018, and Action Bronson across multiple models including a 990v6 Baklava. That roster explains why the brand's collaborations feel personal rather than corporate. The wider opening came from the 990 family becoming the American dad shoe, the plain comfort choice documented on Steve Jobs, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner and Hilary Duff, which normcore and high fashion then reclaimed as a design position in the 2010s.
A blue-led collaboration colourway on a technical runner works by breaking the panels apart. Expect the azul tones to be distributed across the mesh base, the layered overlays and the heel structure with contrast on the smaller details and the side wall block N, so the shoe's machined geometry stays visible instead of being flattened into one field. The 1906R fits closer than a lifestyle model, which follows from its performance running ancestry. New Balance's midsole philosophy is the constant: ENCAP encapsulates a soft EVA core in a moulded polyurethane rim for stability with low compression set, and ABZORB is the softer foam and rubber blend for dispersing heel strike. Width fittings solve most fit issues.
