The Chinese Track Top is what happens when adidas lets a regional studio rewrite a global archetype. Designed by the adidas Originals team in Shanghai, the CTT takes the classic Originals track jacket and swaps its most recognisable feature, the exposed zip, for pankou, the knotted fabric buttons of traditional Chinese dress, set under a mandarin standing collar. The zip is still there, just hidden behind the buttons, so the reference stays heritage while the wearing experience stays modern. It debuted at Shanghai Fashion Week, then released first across mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan before reaching Europe and finally the United States. This is version 3.1, the third evolution of the idea, and Ash Grey is the quietest read in the range: a cool light grey that lets cut and proportion carry the jacket instead of colour.
Two ways to wear the Ash Grey. First, let the collar do the work: black wide-leg trousers, a white tee underneath, low-profile leather sneakers, buttons fastened to the top so the mandarin neckline reads deliberate. Second, drop it down: straight indigo denim, a grey marl hoodie layered under, Sambas or Gazelles, zip open and buttons loose. Ash grey is the easiest colour in the range to place, so it covers office-adjacent days as readily as weekends. On fit, this is Asia sizing cut loose on UNITEFIT, so most buyers take their usual size and anyone sitting between sizes or wanting more room goes up one. Spacer knit creases far less than woven nylon, which makes it a good travel jacket. Wash cold, hang dry, and keep it away from high heat so the elastane does not go slack.
The CTT became the rare China-exclusive that the rest of the world chased precisely because it could not have one. It landed right before Lunar New Year content season, when diaspora creators were filming homecoming shopping hauls, and it slotted straight into xinzhongshi, the new Chinese style movement that wears heritage codes as contemporary fashion rather than costume. Stores sold out, CNN covered the frenzy, and resale on global marketplaces ran near 400 US dollars. Spotted on Ouyang Nana, Ma Sichun, Jin Chen, He Yu and Wu Xuanyi in off-duty settings, and Manchester United players turned up in custom grey versions before a match, which pulled a football audience into a jacket that started life as a fashion week piece.
The body is a smooth spacer knit in 92% polyester and 8% elastane, and that is the reason this jacket holds a shape instead of collapsing the way a nylon shell does. Spacer fabric is two knitted faces built around an air layer, so you get structure and a little insulation without bulk, while the elastane keeps everything moving with you. Closure is a full zip worn behind the knot buttons, which gives you a clean placket whichever way you fasten it. Side pockets take a phone and keys. Elastic cuffs and hem hold the sleeves and waist so the silhouette stays boxy rather than droopy. The 3-Stripes run down the sleeves. It is cut on UNITEFIT, the adidas all-gender sizing system, in a deliberately loose fit.
