Designed by Peter Moore and released on 22 November 2022 as part of Nike's Dunk line. This release has a leather upper in Dark Driftwood/Black/Sesame/Sail. Dark Driftwood is a greyed, weathered brown, style code DD1503 200, and it is the least fashionable colour in the women's Dunk range in the best possible way. Driftwood is wood that has been in the water long enough to lose its colour, which is a fair description of what this palette does to a court shoe: it takes a silhouette designed to broadcast team allegiance and drains it of any allegiance at all. What is left is a well proportioned low top in a colour that goes with everything, which is why colourways like this outsell the loud ones in markets where a person buys one pair of sneakers and wears them everywhere.
Recipe one: cream wide leg trousers, a chocolate knit and a tan bag, an earth toned fit where the shoe is the darkest point rather than the brightest. Recipe two: black straight jeans, a white tee and an olive jacket, using the driftwood tone to soften an otherwise hard palette. This is the most practical colourway here for Indian city wear, since it hides dust between cleans and works from office to evening without changing register. Buy it the way you would buy a daily shoe: a half size down from your usual if you have a narrow foot, true to size if not. Brush dry, clean with mild soap on a barely damp cloth, and avoid whitening products on the tinted midsole.
Nike's Indian business has been a lesson in how a brand's cultural weight and its commercial reality can diverge. Priced roughly 30 percent above competitors, it reported no net profit from 2006 until the financial year ending 2019, when it posted about 76.7 million rupees on revenue of about 8.14 billion that had been flat for four years, and it closed roughly 200 stores from 2017, leaving around 150 outlets against a 2010 target of 350. Meanwhile the Swoosh remained a status symbol in urban and hip hop fashion worldwide from the 1980s onward. A neutral everyday Dunk is what you buy when the shoe has to justify itself as clothing rather than as an event.
Muted browns hide their construction well, so the panelling separates by tone rather than contrast and the shoe reads as a single object. That works in favour of daily wear, because creasing across the toe box shows as shading rather than as a crack, and dust does not announce itself the way it does on white leather. The build is the standard Dunk Low, a stitched panel upper with a padded collar, a foam midsole with no visible air unit and a rubber outsole with a pivot circle, so the ride is flat, firm and close to the ground. The women's last is cut slightly narrower through the midfoot, and the leather softens rather than stretches with wear.
