Culture Note™
Released on 19 October 2022 and part of On Running's Cloudrunner line. This release has a mesh upper in Frost/Turmeric. The Cloudrunner is the clearest example of On writing its engineering into a specific problem. On describes its geometry as a wide, stable CloudTec build with precisely engineered cavities that channel energy in order to reduce lateral wobble, which is a stability brief rather than a speed brief. The company behind it started in Zurich in 2010, after Olivier Bernhard glued cut sections of garden hose to a sole and Nike declined the idea, so he built it with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti instead. Turmeric Frost puts that steady platform in an unexpectedly warm palette: a deep golden orange run against a cold pale grey, the kind of pairing that makes a support shoe look chosen rather than prescribed.
Turmeric Frost rewards restraint everywhere else. Run it with grey shorts and a plain white tee so the orange is the only strong note, or wear it with washed indigo denim and a cream sweatshirt when the shoe is doing walking duty. It suits long steady runs, daily mileage and time on your feet more than sharp intervals. Take your usual running size and leave about a thumbnail at the toe, and if you use an orthotic, check the fit with it in place since the platform is broad. Warm tones stain visibly, so wipe splashes off the same day, use a mild soap on the upper only, and let the shoes dry in shade with the insoles removed.
On is a young company that reads like an older one because of how fast it scaled: 6,000 retailers across 55 countries by 2019, about 40 percent of the Swiss running shoe market, then a New York listing in September 2021. Its culture grew out of triathlon and road running, the On Athletics Club under Dathan Ritzenhein, and sponsored runners including David Kilgore, before Roger Federer took a shareholding in November 2019 and The Roger followed in July 2020. Cloudrunner belongs to the running half of that story and is the shoe most likely to be worn by someone doing steady weekly mileage rather than chasing a colourway.
Stability here comes from shape, not from a stiff post. The CloudTec pods on this model are cut wide with engineered cavities so the sole resists sideways movement while still compressing on impact, which is why the shoe feels planted rather than corrective. Turmeric carries the upper and the branding, and Frost takes the cooler structural areas, so the two tones separate the soft parts of the shoe from the parts that hold you in place. That contrast also flatters a wider platform by breaking up its visual mass. On designs from Zurich and manufactures in Indonesia and Vietnam, and the visible pod structure is the brand's signature rather than a decorative detail.
