Michael Kors Jet Set Travel Extra-Small Logo Top-Zip Tote Bag Brown
Michael Kors Jet Set Travel Extra-Small Logo Top-Zip Tote Bag Brown
Culture Note™
Origin
Michael Kors launched his women's ready to wear label at Bergdorf Goodman in New York in 1981, aged twenty two, after learning the trade on the shop floor at Lothar's on 57th Street rather than finishing at FIT. What he wanted was American sportswear made desirable: luxury with the ease of separates, at a price a working woman could actually reach. Jet set glamour is his own phrase for the result, clothes and bags built for travel and visible ease rather than ornament, and this Jet Set Travel tote carries that idea in its name. Shrunk to extra-small and finished in brown, it is the most portable reading of the shape. The 2004 launch of MICHAEL Michael Kors put handbags at the centre of the business, and the top-zip tote is the piece that line was built around.
Utility
Two ways to wear it. The errand version: straight indigo jeans, a white shirt with the sleeves pushed up, tan loafers, and the tote carried in the hand so the brown reads warm against denim. The travel version, which is what the name asks for: a camel knit, black tailored trousers, and the bag held on the forearm as your personal item beside a bigger case. Brown is the easy choice here because it sits with tan, cream, olive and navy without a decision. Keep it off wet floors, wipe the coated surface with a barely damp cloth and dry it at once, and store it lightly stuffed so the top-zip line stays straight rather than folding in on itself.
Influence
Michael Kors reached the public through television and the American establishment rather than through subculture. Kors judged Bravo's Project Runway for five seasons before leaving the show, which put a designer's face in front of an audience that never followed collections, and the accessible logo tote is exactly the product that audience went out and bought. Michelle Obama wore a black sleeveless Michael Kors dress for her official First Lady portrait, which fixed the label as the uniform of accessible American polish rather than European luxury. A small brown logo tote is the most literal object that reputation produced: recognisable at a glance, priced to be reached, and unembarrassed about being recognised.
Construction
The name states the build. A single top-zip runs the mouth closed, the exterior carries the printed logo ground this line uses, and the whole thing is scaled to extra-small, a size below the tote you would take to work. No dimensions are published against this style code, so read it by intent rather than by number: this is the bag for a phone, a card case and a lipstick, in a shape that still reads as a tote rather than a pouch. Brown is forgiving on a coated logo surface because it hides the friction marks that collect at the base corners. The twin handles are cut for the hand and the forearm, not for the shoulder over a winter coat.
