Designed by Kanye West and released on 3 December 2021 as part of the Yeezy Quantum line. This release has a primeknit upper in Amber Tint/Amber Tint/Amber Tint. The Qntm was the line's move onto the basketball court, a shoe designed to be worn in play rather than only styled, and the first model in the catalogue where performance was part of the pitch. Frozen Barium takes that shape into a pale, cold green with translucent elements, a colour name borrowed from chemistry rather than from terrain, which sets it apart from the Oxford Tan and Moonrock school of naming. The result is one of the more futuristic looking objects in the range: a bulky, high volume silhouette in a colour that suggests laboratory glass. As with almost every model here, no visible logo appears on the shoe.
Pale green with translucent panels is a strong colour, so let it lead. Recipe one: black technical trousers with a cinched hem and a black long sleeve, so the shoe is the only colour in an otherwise dark fit. Recipe two: grey sweat shorts and a white tee for warm days, where the cold green reads clean rather than clinical. Avoid brown and tan tones, which fight the chemistry palette. Take your usual size and lace through the cage properly, since the support is the point of the build. Translucent panels yellow with UV exposure, so store them away from sunlight, wipe the cage with a damp cloth and brush the knit dry after wearing.
The Qntm arrived late in the adidas era, when the design language had already reshaped the market and the brand was pushing into new categories. Behind it was a release culture the line invented, where limited drops, bot buying, queue culture and resale turned launches into events, and a partnership that generated roughly two billion dollars a year at its peak. adidas terminated that partnership on 25 October 2022 after antisemitic public remarks by founder Kanye West, stating the comments and actions were unacceptable, hateful and dangerous and violated its values. The basketball line ended before it could build any real on court history.
The upper pairs a knit base with a translucent moulded cage that wraps the midfoot and forefoot, giving lateral support the knit alone could not deliver while keeping the shoe visually light. That translucency is what makes Frozen Barium work, letting the pale green read differently where the cage overlaps the knit and where it does not. The midsole carries a Boost unit, the expanded TPU pellet foam that gives the line its rebound underfoot, with a rubber outsole for traction. Lacing runs through the cage rather than through fabric loops, so the shoe can be tightened for support in a way the pull on models cannot.
