Louis Vuitton went a very long time without a perfume. The maison hired Jacques Cavallier Belletrud in 2012 as its master in-house perfumer, built him a laboratory in Grasse, and only launched its first signature scents years later. Cavallier Belletrud comes from a Grasse family that has been in the region since the fifteenth century, and before Vuitton he worked on Acqua di Gio and L'Eau d'Issey, so the bright, clean register is home ground for him. Imagination arrived in 2021 and started from a molecule rather than a flower. He worked around Ambrox, the crystalline material that reads like ambergris, and wrapped noble citrus and black tea around it instead of the usual heavy amber. This is the icon bottle for it: personalisable with your initials, and refillable at a boutique fountain.
Wear it in heat. This is a spring and summer signature first, the kind of composition that holds up in Indian humidity where heavier ambers turn syrupy, and the tea and Ambrox base keeps it wearable when the weather cools. Two sprays is the honest dose, one at the base of the throat and one on the chest under the shirt, because that citrus opening is sharp and a third spray makes the first hour shout. Longevity is a large part of what you are paying for: reviewers consistently report eight to twelve hours from something this bright, with moderate projection that stays polite in a meeting. Chinese black tea extracted with CO2 gives a tannic, papery dryness, Ambroxan pushes a salty skin warmth underneath it, and guaiac wood with olibanum lays in a thread of smoke that stops the whole thing turning sweet. The finish sits close and clean rather than announcing itself across the room.
