Released on 8 February 2024 and part of On Running's Cloudrunner line. This release has a mesh upper in Glacier/Sage. Cloudrunner 2 is the second pass at On's stability shoe, and the brand is unusually direct about what that model is for: a wide CloudTec geometry with precisely engineered cavities that channel energy to cut lateral wobble. The company that built it began in Zurich in 2010, when Olivier Bernhard, a former Swiss Ironman champion, glued cut garden hose to a sole to test soft landing and hard take off, took the idea to Nike, was turned down, and founded On with David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti. This pair is the wide fitting version in Glacier Sage, a cold pale grey lifted by a muted green, which is the most understated way to wear a shoe built around support.
Glacier Sage suits soft, washed clothing. Wear it with stone coloured joggers and a grey crewneck for daily mileage and long walks, or with dark straight jeans and an olive chore jacket when you want the green to look intentional. It is a steady mileage and standing shoe rather than a speed shoe. The wide build should feel roomy across the forefoot without letting the heel slip, so take your usual length and try it with the socks you actually run in, especially if you wear an orthotic. Rinse only the outsole after wet use, wipe the mesh with mild soap, and dry them in shade with the insoles pulled out so the midsole is not heat stressed.
The brand's cultural entry was through endurance sport, not subculture: triathlon, road racing, the On Athletics Club coached by Dathan Ritzenhein, sponsored athletes including David Kilgore, and bobsleigh shoes built for the 2022 Winter Olympics. Roger Federer became a shareholder in November 2019 and collaborated on The Roger from July 2020, which is when the brand crossed into general wardrobes, and tennis players including Iga Swiatek signed from March 2023. A wide fitting stability trainer is the least fashionable shoe in that story and the most honest one: it is bought for how a body actually moves rather than for what a shoe signals.
The wide build changes the volume of the shoe rather than its intent, giving more room across the forefoot for feet that get pinched by a standard last. Underneath, the CloudTec pods do the structural work, engineered as cavities that compress both horizontally and vertically so the sole absorbs impact and steadies the foot without a rigid corrective element. Glacier Sage keeps the whole thing low contrast, with the green surfacing on details rather than sweeping the upper, which suits a shoe most people wear several times a week. On designs in Zurich and produces in Indonesia and Vietnam, and it is the pod structure, not the branding, that identifies the shoe at a distance.
